I was born and raised in Quakenbrück in 1966. When I was 14, I spent all my confirmation money on a music system with a record player, amplifier and tape deck. The only problem was that I was 50 Deutschmarks short. Luckily, my father took pity on me. Incidentally, the amplifier is still in use today and will cause a dispute over inheritance between my daughters in the distant future. Laugh.
If anyone is wondering about my first records… Pussycat first of all, and Boney M. – Love For Sale. Not necessarily highlights of music history, but they are part of my history.
At the age of 16, I found Markus, Jörg and a few other friends with whom I shared a passion for music. And the best thing is: these friends are still part of my life. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but they are always there!
In the years that followed, a lot revolved around music, speaker construction, Irish folk in Quakenbrück, various concert visits, regular visits to Bernd’s record shop, partying and the youth disco ‘Dampfkessel’ in Neustadt. That’s where I had my first experiences as a DJ and later also played at one or two events as the ‘GSG’ mobile disco.
In 1991, I moved to Espelkamp for professional reasons and for the next 32 years, the Minden-Lübbecke district was my home. Music continued to accompany me, but my career as a DJ came to an abrupt end *laughs*.
During my time in Quakenbrück, Markus introduced me to the electronic soundscapes of musicians such as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Jean-Michel Jarre, which I grew to love. Sometime around
1996, I bought my first hip hop CD: ‘Zurück aus Rödelheim’ by the Rödelheim Hartreim Projekt.
That was my music. I discovered the power of words and beats: rap music by Samy Deluxe, Schwester S. and Moses Pelham became the soundtrack to my attitude.
How wonderful that my daughters share this music genre with me, so I was able to go to Kontra K. with one daughter and Curse with the other…
Since 2023, I have been back in Quakenbrück, my home town. Here I feel safe, at home, and happy about friendships that have lasted for decades.
And one of these friendships has reactivated the DJ in me. I try to share my passion for German hip hop with you. I play you German hip hop with influences from funk, soul and crisp beats. Music with a message – for the mind and body.
Because: ‘Hip hop is more than just music – it’s a way of life.’
